The line chart shows the demand for electricity in England on typical summer and winter days, whilst the pie chart tells us how the electricity is used in a typical home.
In winter, electricity demand rises from about 34,000 units at midnight to 39,000 units just before 3 a.m. Then use declines to about 31,000 units at about 7:30 a.m., before rising back to 39,000 units at about 1 p.m. Thereafter, demand increases more slowly to 41,000 units at 8 p.m., before a surge to about 44,000 units at about 10:30 p.m. Then use falls quickly again.
In summer, usage is about 18,000 units at midnight. This falls slowly to 13,000 units at 9 a.m. Then it rises to 20,000 units at about 2:30 p.m. and falls sharply back to 16,000 units over the next hour. Thereafter, usage increases a little to 16,000 units at 9:30 p.m., before a sharp rise 19,000 units at 11 p.m. Afterwards, usage decreases again.
Just over half the electricity used in a typical English home is used for heating rooms and water. The rest is fairly evenly divided between ovens, kettles and washing machines (17.5%%), lighting, TV and radio (15%%) and vacuum cleaners, food mixers and electric tools (15%%).
Electricity is therefore used for a variety of purposes and we can see that use is higher in winter than in summer in England. Peak use is in the late evening in winter and early afternoon in summer.
