The most famous historic place in China, I think, is the Palace Museum, which is also called the Forbidden City. It is one of the largest museums in China. Walking through the Tian'anmen Gate and heading up northward, you will arrive at its front gate, which doesn't look like a gate at all, but a fortified citadel with watchtowers on both sides. Situated in the heart of Beijing and once the royal palace of Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it was first built in 1406 and completed around 1420. Today it houses hundreds of thousands of items. Each of them is potentially worth millions. And its buildings also represent the highest level of architectural design of that time. Anyway, its architecture, historical collection and its imperial history attract millions of visitors each year. It is truly a symbol of Beijing.

All right. I would like to tell you about the Silk Road. It's an ancient trading route opened up by the Han Dynasty. Silk merchants from the second century AD used it until its decline in the 16th century. Now the Silk Road is open in parts to tourists who want to explore its heritage. This long string of caravan trails, oases, roads and mountain passes, stretched from northern China, through the desert and mountainous regions to ports on either the Caspian Sea or Mediterranean Sea, and was the conduit for goods and ideas passing between ancient China and the West. The Mongols later used the Silk Road to unite their vast empire, as Marco Polo found when he traveled it in the 13th century. The two main routes are split into the north route and the south route. The Silk Road was a major highway for the spread of Buddhism into East Asia, and later for the growth of Islam, and consequently many ruins dating back to the early centuries can still be seen. Within China the main sights are found in Xinjiang Province, including the Buddhism grottos at Dunhuang, and ancient relics at Turpan, such as the ruins of the city of Jiaohe. Travel along the Silk Road can be quite difficult because of the climate and lack of developed infrastructure. I just think historical places like this are so interesting because you can imagine what life was like for people so long ago.
